Have You Ever Seen Such Giant Dogs?

There are all kinds of dogs, but I prefer little Pomeranians or Poodles as pets. Those who want bigger dogs go in for a Golden Retriever or a simple Mongrel, or huge ones like the German Shepherd, Alsatian or the Labrador. And then there is the fondness for the tall and spotted Great Danes or the big spotted Dalmatians. Rarely does a family or even the police have super big dogs as pets, unless you have a ranch or farmhouse, or a big bungalow to house it.
Looking at this list of the biggest dogs in the world, I wonder how the owners manage to take care of them. Nevertheless, however ferocious, every dog needs love! And it provides loyalty in return, doesn’t it?

1. Great Dane – the largest dog breed

Great Dane

The Great Dane has long held the record for the largest dog breed. Not only are they often the tallest breed—with Great Danes snagging Guinness World Records’ title of biggest dog in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, and now, 2021.
On average, though, the American Kennel Club (AKC) reports that Great Danes have a life expectancy of anywhere from seven to 10 years and that males grow up to 32 inches, and 175 pounds. Comparatively, female Great Danes can grow up to 30 inches and 140 pounds.

2. Irish Wolfhounds

Irish Wolfhounds

Male Irish Wolfhounds weigh about 120 pounds while females weigh about 105 pounds. This dog will appear even bigger because it stands 3 feet tall. While they were initially bred in Ireland to drag men out of chariots and off horses, they make wonderful obedience training dogs. They are also often used as rescue canines because of their height and eagerness to please.

3. Mastiff

The largest dog in the world as of 2021 was an English Mastiff, a breed recognized as mastiffs by the American Kennel Club. This dog named Aicama Zorba weighed 343 pounds. Typically, however, the biggest dog in the world stands about 30 inches tall at the shoulder; its female counterpart is slightly shorter. Male mastiffs also weigh 160 to 230 pounds while females weigh 120 to 170 pounds – anywhere from about half to over two-thirds of the size of the biggest dog ever.

4. Black Russian Terrier

Black Russian Terrier

Though we usually tend to think of terriers as a smaller (even sometimes toy) breed, the Black Russian Terrier definitely makes the cut as one of the world’s biggest breeds. On average, male Black Russian Terriers are 27 to 30 inches tall, and females 26 to 29 inches tall. They can weigh anywhere from 80 to 130 pounds.
