The Challenge Of Two Giants – Volvo Trucks – The Iron Knight Vs Volvo S60 Polestar

The transportation industry

As the transportation industry expands, truck manufacturers must find new ways to differentiate their tractor-trailers from the competition. When it comes to selecting the right truck, drivers frequently consider torque ratio and towing capacity. Volvo demonstrated the superiority of its trucks by completing an incredible test in which they pulled 750 tonnes (825 US tons) with a single truck. Obviously, that weight refers to the weight and not the resistive rolling force, but the feat is still a world-first. Check out the video below of the Volvo FH16 towing a long train of fully loaded trailers.

Pulling this much weight and length of load on a normal road would be impossible, but this incredible feat demonstrates just how capable Volvo trucks are. Magnus Samuelsson, the world’s strongest man, was hired as the rig’s driver to add some spice to the challenge. You don’t have to be the world’s strongest man to drive a Volvo, although we imagine it helps in a challenge like this.

Looking into the physics here, the initial burst of energy is by far the highest seen throughout the challenge. To get everything moving, the truck’s engine must overcome the static friction of the wheels. When the train of crates first begins to move, you can see how much strain this puts on the cab as it lifts up. When all of this mass is moving, the track gains momentum, and the strain on the engine is much reduced. Because the rig is moving, kinetic friction occurs, causing the resistive forces of motion to decrease in comparison to when it was stationary. Regardless, an incredible feat of engineering.

If a truck ever brought this much weight up to highway speeds, it would take an incredible distance to stop the cars, not to mention how many disk brakes you would wear out. So, if you’re looking for a semi-truck, Volvo can do almost anything.
